This week marks the start of the World Championships for Trampoline, Double mini trampoline (DMT) and tumbling this year to be hosted in Birmingham.
Birkenhead Trampoline Club is sending four athletes and a coach to the championships after they all qualified for the Great Britain team after two qualification events this year.
Beth Williamson (24) will be first to compete in the Senior Ladies DMT with her competition starting on Friday, 10 November. This is Beth’s fifth consecutive World Championships for Great Britain which is an outstanding achievement.
Declan Carter (14), Megan Sprakes (18), and Alfie Williams (16) will compete the following week at the World Age and Junior World Championship in their respective age groups.
This will be Declan and Megan’s second World Age Championships for Great Britain after they both competed last year in Bulgaria. Declan has represented GBR on many occasions now and is doing incredibly well for his age. This year he placed 5th in the British Championships against athletes two years older than him.
Megan has now competed for both England and GBR multiple times and is gaining valuable experience with all the opportunities she’s creating for herself. She has this year been crowned British and English Champion and now sets her sights on the world stage.
This will be Alfie’s first Great Britain representation and even more incredible as he only returned to the sport just one year ago after taking a three-year break. He has had to work incredibly hard to gain new skills to be able to hit the qualification mark for his age group.
Sarah Madge, Birkenhead trampoline club coach, will also be joining the world age team as the Lead DMT coach and will work alongside other coaches and officials from around the country to make this event run smoothly for the athletes.
The championships haven’t been held in the UK since 2011 and it is a very exciting time for the sport. Tickets for the event are still available from the Ticket Factory
The event for the club’s World age members (Declan, Megan, and Alfie) is all self-funded and is costing parents around £1500 to send the athletes to the event. The club is currently looking for some local businesses that would consider sponsoring some of these young athletes.
