Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 31 March 2024

Derby Jets fired themselves into the quarter finals of the David Keith Tacy Memorial Cup after shooting down Upton Willows 6-1.

Firing the goals for Derby Jets were Carl Hamm with a double added to singles from Kev Day, Sam Jones, Adam Larway, and Dylan Roach.

Queens Park sailed to a 4-1 win at Great Float S&S with a splendid 4-1 win thanks to strikes from Alex Cherera with a brace, and further singles from Harvey Sample and Charlie Holland. The win has elevated Queens Park into pole position for the first time since the early part of the season.

The Blue Riband of trophies known as the Ryan ‘Gigsy’ Memorial Trophy is a trophy that Queens Park have not won since 2019 but don’t rule out a late surge from Dock AFC.

Woodchurch Hotel and Rock Ferry Social also have an outside chance as they both registered away wins at KRCT Bidston and Wellington respectively.

Woodchurch Hotel won 4-3, not the ideal preparation for the Cheshire Cup final next Sunday at Vauxhall’s for KRCT Bidston while their opponents next week, Rock Ferry Social, warmed up with a fine 4-0 result thanks to Rory Aldis and Ben Ryan hat-trick.

Eastham Rangers Colts, who are favourites to lift the Maxwell’s Barber Division One title, have the mammoth task of playing 10 more league games, having played only their second league game since last October as they beat AFC Shaftes 4-1. Joe Foster netted a fine double, supported by Joe Saunders and Joel Whalley.

It is a similar story for the other six clubs that have a chance to win promotion to the top flight. Upton Town and Moreton Rovers both lost vital home games. Moreton went down 3-0 to Prenton FC while Upton Town (Tom Ward (2), Morgan Woods, Will O’Leary) lost in a 10-goal thriller 6-4 after entertaining Barcode FC (Danny France (2), Harry Firkins (2), Kynan and Jake Norton).

In what should be the business end to the season, with cup finals galore and promotion places up for grabs, there is the possibility of eight clubs aiming for a top three slot,

The Martin Gallier Project Division Two leaders, Lions FC, had a week off while the rest play catch up.

Eagle Stirrup FC enhanced their chances with a tremendous 4-2 result over fancied Old Parks after Jason Farrell, Kazim Tektas, Louis Brown, and Alex Smith all netted.

Wirral Radio Newton registered a second maximum points haul in consecutive weeks and did their chances no harm with a 4-1 win at Woodchurch Rovers (David Harrison). On the mark for Wirral Radio were Tyler Gill (2), Josh Ross, and Kieran Donoghue.

In the battle of Rangers, it was Eastham Rangers who took the honours over AFC Rangers (Lewis McKnight). Goalgetters for Eastham Rangers were Callum Crowder, Tay Jones, Liam Harris, Jack Jones, and Kieran Hodgson.

Oxton Celtic continue to dominate Division Three, with their latest win being a 2-1 win over North Wirral Saints (Ben Dunn).

A solitary effort from Danny Allen was all that was needed for Wirral Athletic to maintain second place, with a 1-0 verdict over AF Tima.

West Kirby United had Robbie Nairn on fine form after he bagged a four-goal haul, with a Tom Danby single in a 5-2 result over Parkgate St Germain.

Glenavon Athletic (Danny Rowland (2), Paul Keenan) took the honours in a mid-table tussle at Victoria Colts (Billy Harrison (2)).
