Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 25 February 2024

A Lewis Simpson brace coupled with a Corey Wilson strike was just enough for Higher Bebington Kelma to reach the Wirral District Football Association Sunday Junior Final with a 3-1 result outrunning North West Harriers.

The shock result in round four of the Tony Houlihan Memorial Challenge Cup saw The Martin Gallier Project Division Two side Eagle Stirrup take the scalp of Premier Division side Neston Nomads (Jack Lloyd). Both teams were locked at 1-1 on 90 minutes but Eagle Stirrup (Ciaran Atkinson) won the tie 5-3 on penalties to claim a place in the draw for the quarter finals.

Joining Eagle Stirrup FC in the hat are current holders and eight-time winners Dock AFC who knocked out Woodchurch Hotel FC who have lifted the cup on 3 occasions. It was the second week running that Dock knocked out Woodchurch Hotel in a domestic cup. Greg Drummond and Matty Carlin were on hand for Dock, while Tom Hayes replied for Woodchurch Hotel. Both teams are due to meet again next week in what could go towards what name goes on the Ryan ‘Gigsy’ Atherton Premier Division in May.

Also into the hat are Premier Division side Cheshire Cheese, who had a tough home test with Division Three high flyers, Feeneys FC. Cheshire Cheese had Sean Wilson, Lorcan Rogan, and Anthony Evans who hit a double on the scoresheet in their 4-2 win.

KRCT Bidston had Dava Bowe and Kian Hamm on hand to sink Great Float S&S 2-0, to secure their place in the last eight.

AFC Shaftes current good run of form continues, as Dave Southall with a smart double, added to singles from Teddy Wilson, Nathan Hickson, and Mark Young, gave AFC Shaftes an unbeaten four-game run, with Barcode FC (Neil Davies, Kynan Mason) on the receiving end of a 5-2 romp.

Wirral Athletic elevated themselves into second place in Division Three after a resounding 4-1 scoreline over Parkgate St Germain. Wirral’s goal-getters were Danny Allen, Jamie Galloway, Craig Mills, and Jamie Payne, while Johnny Gibson responded for Parkgate.
