Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 10 March 2024

The current holders of the Wirral District Football Association Sunday Amateur Cup, Whitby Rangers, secured a place in the final for the second consecutive season.

The game went to a penalty shootout after finishing 1-1 at 90 minutes, with Whitby winning 5-4. Fellow Maxwell’s Barber Division rival Derby Jets will meet Whitby in the final on a traditional Easter Sunday date at Heswall FC.

The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League now have representation in all three Wirral FA Sunday Cups and Cheshire County FA. Two trophies are guaranteed to come back to the Houlihan’s League; a great achievement in the League’s Diamond anniversary season.

Lancelyn Glenavon had a narrow 1-0 win over Eastham Rangers Colts in the Tony Houlihan Memorial Challenge Cup and firmed up a place in the last eight.

Matt Lydiate with a brace and Suphot Thiamdong called the tune for Wirral Radio Newton in the David Keith Tacy Cup fourth-round tie with a superb 3-1 result at Moreton Rovers who replied via Ashton Jameson.

Rory Aldis and Peter Charles each bagged a pair for Rock Ferry Social to sink Great Float S&S 4-1 to seal a place in the semi finals of the Veronica Conway Premier Cup and will meet KRCT Bidston next Sunday. They will also be facing each other in the Cheshire County FA Sunday Challenge Cup and have a league game to play.

Old Parks had the upper hand in their encounter with Upton Willows (Tyler Cooper) in the Tony Smith Cup. Louis Haddock with a double and a Connor Kent effort gave them a 3-1 verdict for a place in the semi finals.

West Kirby United got back to winning ways in the Jimmy Core Cup with a splendid 4-1 result at in-form Wirral Athletic (Joe Roberts). Marksmen for West Kirby were Tom Fleming (2), Ben Banks, and Matt Cleary. They will host AFC Raeburn in the semi finals next Sunday.

Athletic VH also made it into the last four posting a 3-1 win over highly fancied Feeneys FC and they will also be playing for a place in the final hosting WDFA Sunday Junior Cup Finalists Higher Bebington Kelma.

Queens Park went goal crazy with an emphatic 8-1 scoreline over an under-strength Wellington FC (Shay Roberts). Harvey Sample hit a hat-trick with further strikes from Tom Black, Jack Bentley, Charlie Holland, and two from Tommy Randall.

Queens Park are now only two points behind Cheshire Cheese who finished their programme with a 3-0 reversal at Woodchurch Hotel (Charlie Macinnes, Jordan Deer, Jake Prescott).

Neston Nomads earned maximum points recording a 3-1 success in their penultimate game of the current campaign at Cheshire Cup finalists KRCT Bidston (Lewis Clarke). Netting for Neston were Luke Blondel, Rob Cottrell, and Rob Marrs.

A solitary goal from Daniel Woodcock kept Rig Move in pole position in the Maxwell’s Barber Division One with a 1-0 win over Bushell Athletic.

Mark Head, Dan Chamney, Paul Ryan (2), and Tom Povall were the goal-getters for Lions FC, the only club that still have a 100% record in all four Divisions. Lions FC are in the driving seat in The Martin Gallier Project Division Two after their latest conquest 5-2 over AFC Rangers (Chris Caress (2)).

Eastham Rangers, who have an outside chance of promotion, accounted for Poulton Victoria S&S (Jay Little (2)) 3-2.

Oxton Celtic continue to dominate Division Three after another maximum points haul at AFC Raeburn (Josh Morgan, Fin Costain) 3-2.

North Wirral Saints (Callum Sait, Frazer Lucking, Ben Dunn (2), Josh Lynch, Scott Bradshaw) had a tremendous 6-0 win in a mid-table tussle with Victoria Colts,

Higher Bebington Kelma (Lewis Simpson (2), Adam Clarke) warmed up for their next two cup ties one being a semi final followed by the WDFA Sunday Junior Cup Final with a 3-1 win over AFC Tima (Ussumane Jalo).

The league is also accepting applications for the Youth Division for the same 2024-2025 season that is scheduled to start in August 2024. Any Youth clubs/teams that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known as Youth U18s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U17s.
