Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 1 October 2023

The Wirral District Football Association Premier and the Sunday Amateur Cups took centre stage for clubs from The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League this week.

In an all Birkenhead clash, there were two giant-killing acts with Steve Rowlands hitting a tremendous hat-trick for Rig Move FC, from the Maxwell’s Barber Division One, to defeat Premier Division KRCT Bidston 4-1. Vinny O’Toole replied for KRCT while Jay Easton was also on the mark for Rig Move. Both teams are now scheduled to play each other again next Sunday in The Cheshire County Football Association Sunday Challenge round one.

It was a similar giant killing act for Eastham Rangers Colts who had Nathan Saunders on hand to net the only goal of the game at Lancelyn Glenavon 1-0 to book their place in the hat for round two.

A Joe Molyneux treble fired Corsair FC into the last 8 after a 4-2 success at Wallasey outfit PLCC FC 4-2. Jason Bull was also on the scoresheet for Corsair and it was also their first win in all competitions this season.

Great Float S&S had the upper hand in an all Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday League tie at Neston Nomads (Ross Murphy 2). Great Float sailed to a 4-2 win with Shaun Farrell, Josh Maldon, Peter Morgan, and an og registering. Once again both Great Float S&S and Neston Nomads will lock horns again in the Cheshire FA Sunday Challenge Cup.

14 time winners, Queens Park FC, warmed up for their National FA Sunday cup next week by securing their place in the quarter finals crushing Vineyard 7-0 with a brace each from Harvey Sample and Owen Payne, supplemented by singles from Jamie Leyland, Joseph Ly, and Levi Chiduka.

Some games were postponed due to waterlogged pitches but as usual many clubs are using the favoured 3G pitches as they don’t want to have huge backlogs of fixtures in the early spring on 2024.

Four games were lost for clubs from the league in the WDFA Sunday Amateur Cup and they will be rescheduled accordingly.

The three games that did take place were all defeats AFC Shaftes (Eddie Jebb 2) dipped 8-2 at Oldershaw. Clipper FC were shot down by The Gun FC 4-2 and Eastham Rangers were driven out of the cup by Vauxhall Motors Vets 6-0.

Two games that did beat the weather were in The Tony Houlihan Memorial Cup, with Adam Larway notching a five-goal salvo for Derby Jets added to further strikes from Kevin Day (2) and Kyle Bennett in a 8-1 win over Athletic VH.

Parkgate St Germain (Ethan Davies) ran out winners 2-0 on penalties after they finished all square at 1-1 with Victoria Colts (Kyle Sallis).

Only one game was scheduled in the Maxwell’s Barber Division One, with Whitby Rangers claiming all three points at Prenton FC after Matty Vickers, Dom Hoppe, and Macca James all netted in a narrow 3-2 win to keep the Whitby lads form going after losing their opening game of the season.

A Stefan Dodd double strike was just enough for Saughall FC to take the honours in a local derby against Eagle Stirrup FC (Jack Byrne) and elevated themselves into pole position in the Martin Gallier Project Division Two after a narrow 2-1 win.

Oxton Celtic made it six straight wins on the trot to maintain their quest for promotion to head Division Three with a resounding 5-0 win over Glenavon Athletic. They are closely followed by West Kirby United who are also in fine form accounting for North Wirral Saints (Mike Manser) 5-1.
