Birkenhead Sixth Form College students have been celebrating today as their A-Level results have broken records.
Over 650 students received their results and each is an individual success story, with choices for the future opened to them through their hard work and commitment to reaching their full potential.
Birkenhead Sixth Form College’s percentage of grades A*, A and B was up on 2019 levels, with 44.79% of all results being high grades.
The College is also confident that after some anomalies have been ironed out, that figure will increase further, maintaining the College’s upward trajectory of outstanding performance.
Despite being a non-selective institution, the percentage of students at the College who had the option of grammar school education after high school achieving high grades was over 70%. Students join the College, which is the only specialist sixth form in the area, from more than 60 different high schools in Wirral, Merseyside, Cheshire, and beyond each year.
There were more than 1400 individual A Levels sat at Birkenhead Sixth Form College this summer, and BTEC students also performed superbly, with 96% of BTEC Diploma students being rewarded with the grades of Distinction* or Distinction.
Over 80% of the College’s students will now head to university in September, with a significant number being the first generation in their family to do so. Many students have secured places at the UK’s leading universities, including the prestigious Russell Group and Oxbridge institutions.
Amongst the stories from results day was Callum Griffiths, who is now going to Cambridge to study Natural Sciences having joined the College from The Birkenhead Park School. His A*, A* and an A in Biology, Chemistry and Physics secured him a place to follow his dream of working in environmental issues.
Niamh Huxley’s three As in History, Law and Psychology saw her start to pursue a career as a solicitor with a degree in law at the University of Liverpool, while Cam Woolley is entering into a degree apprenticeship in marketing as he seeks to further his entrepreneurial skills.
Principal at Birkenhead Sixth Form College, Mike Kilbride, said, “This year’s A Level and BTEC results are further testament to the hard work of the students and staff at the College, but also gives validation for our approach. If you look after the every day processes, the outcomes look after themselves. Every interaction counts as does every lesson, and the proof of that is in the results that students now leave the College having achieved.”
Mike continued, “What education at this College does is give young people choices. The future careers of all of our students are many and varied, but they leave here with doors opened for them, whether they come here from a grammar school or any other high school. To see such a huge number of students that we have each year thrive and meet or exceed their potential is what we make our business. But the students are the ones that achieve those things. They are our biggest asset, and today is their day of celebration. We congratulate each and every one of them for their successes.”
