On Saturday, 28th August, two Bebington men will take on the epic challenge of walking 97 miles between Sheffield and Liverpool.
Steve Lamb and his son George have planned a 97-mile route from Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium and Liverpool’s Anfield. Whilst the walk is in memory of the 97, they are raising money for The Liverpool FC Foundation, which delivers help for underprivileged children and young people in the local area providing a range of life-changing opportunities.
The walk will take six days and some of their overnight stays have been kindly donated by Steve’s employer, Village Hotels.
Initially, the father and son team were aiming to raise £1000 for the foundation, and at the time of writing, they were just a few pounds short of their target, so birkenhead.news made a small donation to hit the £1000 target.
Steve is not inexperienced when it comes to physical challenges. He told us, “I’ve cycled John O’Groats to Lands End, cycled 2,000 miles around Scotland, and my wife Cathy and I have done the New York Marathon together.”
Steve has had three hip replacements on his right hip and after a gap in his endurance challenges said, “I thought, before I get too old, it’s a good time to do this challenge with my son George!”
Steve continued, “I was 28 at the time of the Hillsborough disaster and George was 28 when we were organising the walk, so it has become a bit of a pilgrimage for us as Liverpool fans.” Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to delay their walk for a year, until now.
Phil Scraton, the Wallasey-born critical criminologist, academic, and author known particularly for his investigative work into the context, circumstances and aftermath of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster and as a member of the Hillsborough Independent Panel has lent his support to Steve’s challenge. “He has kindly emailed me and he is donating a signed book for us to raffle off to help make some money.”, Steve said.
George added, “We’d love it if you could go and give my Dad’s fundraising page a visit! Any donations would be greatly appreciated!”
