Be ‘More Than Kind’ this Christmas and help those struggling to buy food and pay bills

The St Vincent de Paul Society (England and Wales) have launched their annual Christmas Appeal, More Than Kind, to raise vital funds for those who are struggling with the rising cost of living.

Following the success of last year’s appeal, which raised more than £140,000 for the charity’s Cost of Living Support Fund, the SVP are once again raising vital funds for those who cannot afford to pay bills, buy food and other everyday essentials, or pay housing costs.

In the past year, the SVP has seen a sharp increase in the number of people reaching out for the charity for help with an alarming 150% increase in calls for help in comparison to 2022.

In a report published by the Wirral Intelligence Service, it is believed that more than 36,000 food parcels were given out to residents in the Wirral during the 2020/21 period, and more than 21,700 households were identified as being fuel poor during the same period.

Local resident, Sean, sought help from the Birkenhead St Vincent’s Wirral Community Support Centre (based on Grange Road West) following the death of his partner. Unable to cope, financially and emotionally, the stress nearly cost him his job.  SVP supported him with the wraparound service that includes debt advice, benefits advice, access to a food bank and mental health support.

Sean explains, “Everyone has been very, very supportive and very empathetic and importantly listened to me. The help I have received has helped me to get my life back on track.

“The staff at SVP Wirral have been such a great help. They have been so much more than kind to me in so many ways. I will never forget their kindness and am forever grateful.”

Money raised from the SVP’s More Than Kind Appeal this Christmas, will go towards helping other people like Sean not just in the Wirral but all over England and Wales. To donate please visit the St Vincent’s website
