Arrest made in connection with fatal Norris Green collision

Detectives have arrested a woman as part of an investigation into a fatal road traffic collision in Norris Green in February.

At 6.27pm on Sunday, 25 February, emergency services were called to Utting Avenue East to a reports that a pedestrian sustained serious injuries after being involved in a collision with a Ford Transit van.

The victim, John Newton, 81, sadly died in hospital the following day.

On Thursday, 4 April, a 39-year-old woman from Walton was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. She has been conditionally bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Inspector Steve Street said, “Although a man has been charged in connection with the death of Mr Newton, we will continue to act on all information to identify anyone involved.

“Come forward if you know anything or hold images or video of the incident, and we will do the rest.”

Following the incident, John’s family said, “The family wish to express their sincere thanks to everyone that came to help our beloved Dad. John is missed by his whole family including children, grandchildren and the community we live in.

“He was well known in the area having owned his own garage and worked as a mechanic for over 50 years before semi-retiring last year. He was still very active and enjoying running and cycling.

“We hope that those responsible for his death or that know anything will have a turn of conscience and come forward to the police. He will forever be in our hearts.”
