Angela Eagle MP calls on the Government to increase education spending

Dame Angela Eagle, Member of Parliament for Wallasey, has called on the Government to increase education spending in the upcoming Autumn Statement.

Dame Angela Eagle MP has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Secretary of State for Education on behalf of Castleway Primary in Leasowe, urging the Government to prioritise education funding in the upcoming Autumn Statement.

On current spending plans and considering rising costs, Castleway Primary School is facing a loss of over £35,000 in 2023-24 which equates to £350 per pupil.

More widely, 100 of Wirral’s 110 schools face losses equating to £5.2 million in 2023-24. This follows the 9% real-terms fall in spending per pupil between 2010-2020.

As Chancellor, the new Prime Minister promised to restore real-terms per-pupil spending to 2010 levels. Instead, this year it is set to be 3% lower.

The MP said, “This Conservative Government must finally get behind children and teaching staff in Wallasey and provide much-needed education funding in the Autumn Statement.”
