Tranmere Rovers boss, Micky Mellon, looked back on Monday’s win at home to Exeter in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Stevenage, emphasising the importance of the victory.
The SWA make the trip to Hertfordshire this weekend buoyed by Monday’s triumph, Micky looked back on that result and its significance at this stage of the season.
“It was a big win for us, any wins at this time of the season are huge because you’re coming to the end of the season and you know the value of the victory the closer you get to the end of it.
“It was huge and it should be from game 1 to game 46, every game for Tranmere should be a must-win. So I didn’t think it was any more important than any other ones but certainly you saw the value you in the way we celebrated it, because you see the size of the prize the closer you get to the end of the season.
“Obviously against a team like Exeter who have been riding very high and would’ve probably gone top, it’s a good shot in the arm for everybody.
In his interview Micky also heaped praise on stand-in left-back Christopher Merrie, who put in a stellar performance in Monday’s win. He commended the 23-year-olds attitude and described him as a ‘good teammate and a good guy’.
“He isn’t a natural left-back at all. He’s showed the qualities that have made him a very, very good left-back for us, but not just that, that’s not the whole story, maybe more of the story is about how he’s never allowed his head to go down, how he’s constantly stayed with us and been a good teammate and a good guy.
“Because you probably have to accept that people’s heads will go down if they’re not playing or they are not playing a bigger part as they feel that they should be doing. Never once has his head dropped, he’s been a good teammate and a good guy, he’s kept working on his game and he kept believing that he was going to get his opportunity and when he did he wasn’t going to let us down.
“Absolutely he’s gone and done that for us so we’re delighted for him and with him for that and the more players that a manager can have in his group that have that type of attitude certainly the better your job will be.”
