Action-packed match sees Lairds secure victory over Eccleshall

Cammell Laird 1907 FC travelled to Eccleshall for an action-packed fixture that saw four goals and two dismissals.

With the game evenly balanced, a rash challenge saw the home team reduced to 10 men after 16 minutes, but they responded well to look the better team, until the 44th minute when their keeper handled the ball outside of the box and was dismissed.

This allowed Lairds to open the scoring from the resultant free kick as Ben Wood reacted first to the stand-in goalie’s error. Half time 0-1.

The extra players showed through in the second half and Lairds eased home with three more goals from a Billy Beresford header after 54 minutes and strikes from Michael Speed (80 minutes) and James Eaton in the 87th minute for a well-deserved 4-0 victory in a great team effort.

The next fixture is home on Tuesday 15 August versus Barnton FC with a 7.45pm kick off.

The reserves maintained their unbeaten start in the West Cheshire League 3rd division, but had to come from 0-3 and 1-4 down to eventually claim a point in an enthralling 5-5 fixture versus Runcorn Sports reserves, which was nearly a victory at 5-4 ahead until conceding a late penalty for the final result.

On target for Lairds were Kieran Hughes, Ben Crossley, Aaron Bunclark, Peter Charles, and Ellis Jones and they deserve credit for their team work and not giving up against a very good opponent.

Their next fixture is at home on Saturday 19 August versus FC Kirby, with a 3.00pm kick off.
