100km fundraiser for RNLI by West Kirby boys

Two West Kirby brothers, Jack and Orson Wakefield, completed an amazing challenge to run 100km in 28 days to raise funds for the RNLI and have raised over £1000 in the process!

Jack (11) and Orson (9) reached the ‘finishing line’ of this challenge yesterday morning outside of RNLI West Kirby’s station. A group of socially-distanced close family members and some crew cheered the boys as they completed this amazing fundraising effort.

They chose to support the RNLI because they live near to the sea and often see the volunteers at RNLI West Kirby Lifeboat in action. They chose the month of February to fundraise as it is the shortest and often the wettest month and this challenge provided them with a positive outlet during this time.

They recognise the work of the RNLI and the vital role the charity plays in saving lives at sea around the UK and Ireland. They set themselves an initial target to raise £150 but have raised over £1000 to-date. The boys are thrilled with all the support they have received and messages of encouragement.

Speaking following the end of the challenge, Richard Diamond, West Kirby RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager said: ‘We are so proud of the boys achievement and thank them for raising vital funds that will continue to support all the lifesaving work that is carried out by the RNLI. Fundraising activity during the pandemic has been difficult for us as a charity and all donations such as this can make a huge difference. We look forward to welcoming them onto the crew when they are older should they wish to join!’
